William was born in 1885. he attended the Holy Trinity School and the Nelson Street Sunday School. He was a keen footballer and an active member of the White Star and Widnes Rovers Football Clubs. H e married Fanny Hughes in 1911 at All Saints , Runcorn, but does not appear to have had any children.
They lived at 55 Nelson Street and William was employed at the Vacuum Plant. He may have been a relative of Todger Jones.
William initially joined the Cheshire Regiment as Reg No 62143 in March 1917, before being sent out to France in June 1917, and then joining the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as Reg No 29526.
At the time of his death, the war diary states that they were involved in action at Calonne, Cor Lay Lees . He has no known grave and is commemorated on the memorial at Ploegsteert, just south of Ypres.
It is stated that he died on the 12th April, but on his family grave in Runcorn it states that he was killed on the 14th April.
