Born in 1897 at Knutsford, son of draper’s assistant, Harry William and Mary (nee Hyslop) Hillyard, of St John’s Avenue, Knutsford. Walter’s siblings were, Harry Hyslop, Frances Charlotte and Annie. The family later moved to 26, Frances Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock.

Walter attested at Manchester, 10 May 1915, he was five feet six inches tall weighed 140lbs and had a thirty four and half inch chest measurement, and placed with the 6th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. He embarked from Folkestone, 03/08/1916 for France. One month later, 11/09/1916, he was transferred to the 21st Battalion, Manchester’s.

On the 10 October he was appointed, paid, Lance Corporal. His death was assumed in mid-October, and given a fixed date of Wednesday, 24 October 1917. The Manchester Regiment was in the 7th Division, 91st Infantry Brigade, and during the latter part of October was between, WESTOUTRE and EBBLINGHEM.

In the early 1920's when the CWGC collated their information Walters parents had moved to 30, Hyde Grove, Plymouth, Grove, Manchester.

Walter's name is due to  be added to the Knutsford War Memorial.
