Born 30 June 1889 at Bollington, son of brickmaker, Samuel and Mary Hannah (nee Pearson) Barton, of Shrigley Road, Bollington. A family of nine children, James siblings were Amos, Florence, Jane Ann, Alfred, Ethel, Harry, Wilbraham and John.

James married Bertha Burton in the second quarter of 1910 at Prestbury Church.

In 1911, he was working on a farm.

He enlisted, 29/11/1916, and a surviving service record shows he was discharged 15/03/1919, cause, wounds. James was issued a Silver War Badge, number 489456.
