Charles was a former pupil at Silverdale School, before entering Shavington County Primary School on June 16, 1895. Worked as a farmers cowman prior to enlisting. Was a first day casualty of the Battle of the Somme, during an attack on Beaumont Hamel (attempting to capture "Y" Ravine).
