Born and enlisted Crewe. Second son of Thomas and Mary Jane Barnes of 6, Casson Street, Crewe, who had attended Hightown Council (Technical Institute) School. One of the first to volunteer from the Erecting Shop, Crewe Works, where he had worked as a fitter in No.7 and 8 Shops. Went to France on May 12, 1915. On the day of his death, the 9th (Scottish) Division, to which the 63rd Field Company were attached, were in action at Delville Wood.
