Born Nantwich, enlisted Chester. Son of Charles and Sarah Ann Hope of 8, Barony Buildings, Nantwich. Resided in Chester. At the time of enlisting, was serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Stretch & Harlock, Clothiers of Nantwich. Member of the Church Lads Brigade and a choirboy at Nantwich Parish Church. Went to France (Le Havre) on November 16, 1915. His friend Edwin Purcell, whom he joined up with, served in the same battalion, and was killed on the same day.
