Born July 17, 1888. Son of John and Ellen Elizabeth Gill
of 12, Dewes Street, Crewe. Attended St. Mary’s School.
Formerly employed as a labourer in the Brass Foundry, Crewe
Works. Enlisted July 1906 and served on the Implacable,
Majestic and Impregnable. Joined the Pegasus on March 13,
1913. The Pegasus was undergoing repairs at Zanzibar when
she was approached and sunk by the German light cruiser
Königsberg. Her total losses were two officers and 29 men,
with a further 55 wounded. First Class Stoker Frank Rooke
of Crewe survived the incident.
